about

I was taking a songwriting class, and we were asked to write a song in blues form. This is the result, a lament of most every teenage boy I have come across. My long-time pal Jack Dalby performed the harmony vocal on this track. My friend from my Recording and Production Class, Jim Bradley, played the smoking-hot guitar solo.

lyrics

VERSE 1
She said “yes” to the dance, what do I do
It’s time to get ready, and I just don’t have a clue
Why do I wait till the last minute
I think it’s time to light a fuse
I’ve only got an hour
I’ve got those high school dancin’ blues

VERSE 2
Getting dressed for my date, can’t tie my tie
Gotta ask my momma, I feel like I wanna die
Is it the red one or the blue one?
Make up your mind, c’mon and choose
The finish line is close now
I’ve got those high school dancin’ blues

BRIDGE 1
All of this stress has made me break out on my face
The mirror tells me I’m a down and out disgrace
Zits always come in bunches
I wish they’d come in ones and twos
I ain’t got time for no distractions
I’ve got those high school dancin’ blues

GUITAR SOLO

VERSE 3
I’m at her doorstep, I’m ringing the bell
I hope dad doesn’t answer, he is scarier than Hell
His footsteps make me nervous
guess I’ll have to pay my dues
I heard he spent some time in prison
I’ve got those high school dancin’ blues

ORGAN SOLO

VERSE 4
I washed my car, I’ll make the engine roar
Wanna look like double-oh-seven when we pull up to the door
It’s not for her eyes only
We gotta look good when we cruise
This is my chance to be the cool one
And beat those high school dancin’ blues

BRIDGE 2
The music’s playing, we both dig that crazy beat
I hope that when we dance, I don’t step on her feet
If I can keep my rhythm
I won’t have to buy her some new shoes
I’ll just smile and do my two-step
Goodbye to high school dancin’ blues

Mike Browning Southport, North Carolina

Imagine working most of your adult life as nothing more
than a cog in the corporate machine. Then imagine finding
yourself in a community college classroom, led by one of
your musical heroes. That happened to me, after I ran into
Jamie Hoover of the Spongetones at a Dairy Queen. His generosity in sharing his vast knowledge of studio techniques with me has led me to releasing my very first EP.
